Subject AreaScience
Grade Level8
Week #Weeks 7-10 (September 26th-October 21st)
Unit of InstructionUnit 2: Compounds & Mixtures
Standard(s) Taught

SC.8.P.8.5 (Level 1) – Recognize that there are a finite number of elements and that their atoms combine in a multitude of ways to produce compounds that make up all of the living and nonliving things that we encounter.
SC.8.P.8.9 (Level 2) – Distinguish among mixtures(including solutions) and pure substances.

SC.8.N.1.1 – Define a problem from the eighth grade curriculum using appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigations of various types, such as systematic observations or experiments, identify variables, collect and organize data, interpret data in charts, tables, and graphics, analyze information, make predictions, and defend conclusions.

SC.8.P.8.8 (Level 2) – Identify basic examples of and compare and classify the properties of compounds, including acids, bases, and salts.

SC.8.N.1.2 (Level 3) – Design and conduct a study using repeated trials and replication.

Advanced:
SC.912.P.8.7 – Interpret formula representations of molecules and compounds in terms of composition and structure.

SC.912.P.8.11 – Relate acidity and basicity to hydronium and hydroxyl ion concentration and pH.

Learning Targets and Learning Criteria

• I am learning to differentiate between atoms, elements, and compounds
• I am learning to describe how elements combine in a multitude of ways to produce compounds that make up all living and non-living things.
• atoms share/transfer electrons to create a bond between them
• I am learning to compare and contrast between: (N.1.1)
1. Pure substances- Definite physical and chemical properties throughout the specimen. It is the same particle (element or compound)
 Gold (Au) and salt (NaCl) are both examples of a pure substances.
2. Mixtures- Made up of more than one element or compound. Contains multiple substances combined physically not chemically.
 Homogenous Mixture- ex. Sweet Tea
 Heterogenous Mixtures- ex. Salad
3. Suspension- ex. Italian Dressing
4. Colloid- ex. Milk and gelatin o Solutions- A solution is a homogenous mixture and always has a solute dissolved into a solvent. (Solutions are mixtures that may include multiple states of matter)
• I am learning to investigate different ways of making and separating mixtures and solutions, including using a funnel and filter paper, a magnet, dissolving substances, screens, evaporation, etc.
• I am learning to classify a substance based on the properties of a compound.
• Acid- turns litmus paper red, corrosive to metal, less than 7 on the pH scale.
 Examples: lemon, vinegar, stomach acid
• Base- turns litmus paper blue, dissolves fats and oils, more than 7 on the pH scale.
 Examples: soap, laundry detergent, baking soda
• Salt- chemical compound formed from the reaction of an acid with a base.
 Examples: table salt (sodium chloride), Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate)
• I am learning to identify common examples and characteristics of acids, bases, and salts.
• I am learning to classify various substances using the pH scale to identify it as an acid, base, or neutral.

Vocabulary:
acids atom attraction bases bond compound
dissolving element evaporation homogeneous mixtures pH
heterogeneous molecule pH Scale prediction pure substance repetition (repeated trials) replication salts solution
