• differentiate between atoms, elements, and compounds
• explain how elements combine to form compounds that make up all living and
non-living things, for example:
o atoms share/transfer electrons to create a bond between them
(students do not need to know covalent and ionic bonding)
differentiate between pure substances, mixtures, and solutions, including:
o solutions are mixtures that may include multiple states of matter
• investigate different ways of making and separating mixtures and solutions,
o using a funnel and filter paper, a magnet, dissolving substances, screens,
evaporation, etc.
• cite common examples and characteristics of acids, bases, and salts
• Investigate to classify various substances using the pH scale as an acid, base, or

2. Compare and contrast the strengths of various common acids and bases
