Vocab –

Week of 4/24 Chapters 1-4

1.    ague – (n) a fever that makes you shake and feel cold

2.    quinine – (n) a drug used for treating fevers

3.    retorted – (v) replied quickly in an angry or humorous way

4.    grave – (adj) looking or sounding quiet and serious, especially because something important or worrying has happened

5.    reticule – a woman’s small handbag, originally netted and typically having a drawstring and decorated with embroidery or beading

6.    ticks – (n) bedding made from feathers that is traditionally placed on top of mattresses to make them softer

7.    hemming – (v) to hem something in is to surround someone or something closely

8.    riffled – (v) disturbed the surface of; ruffled

9.    bedraggled – (adj) looking untidy, wet, and dirty, especially because you have been out in the rain

10. homespun – (adj) woven at home

 

 

Week of 5/1 Chapters 5-8

1.       gullies – (n) small narrow valleys, usually formed by a lot of rain flowing down the side of a hill

2.       miring – (v) sticking or sinking in deep mud

3.       steely – (adj) extremely determined and very strong

4.       waver – (v) to become weaker or less certain

5.       caulking – (v) filling holes or cracks with an oily or sticky substance in order to keep water out

6.       yearling – (n) an animal, especially a young horse, between one and two years old

7.       ornery – (adj) behaving in an unreasonable and often angry way, especially by doing the opposite of what people want you to do

8.       guttural – (adj) a guttural voice or sound is or seems to be produced deep in someone’s throat

9.       coaxed – (v) persuaded someone to do something that they did not want to do by talking to them in a kind, gentle, and patient way

10.   sound – (adj) physically or mentally healthy

 

 

Week of 5/8 Chapters 9-12

1.    resigned – (adj) to be resigned to something is to calmly accept a situation that is bad, but cannot be changed

2.    gingerly – (adv) in a slow careful way, because you are afraid it will be dangerous or painful

3.    vigil – (n) a period of time, especially during the night, when you stay awake in order to pray, remain with someone who is ill, or watch for danger

4.    spire – (n) a long tapering object

5.    swagger – (n) a way of walking, talking, or behaving that shows you are very confident

6.    lolling – (v) if your head or tongue lolls or if you loll your head, you allow it to hang in a relaxed uncontrolled way

7.    papooses – (n) a type of bag used to carry a child on one’s back

8.    linchpins – (n) pins passed through the end of an axle to keep a wheel in position

9.    unfurled – (v) unrolled and opened

10. reproachful – (adj) a reproachful look, remark etc shows that you are criticizing someone or blaming them

 

Week of 5/15 Chapters 13-16

1.    lapping – (v) if water laps against something, it moves against it in small waves

2.    flourished – (v) developed well and was successful; thrived

3.    sheepishly – (adv) in a slightly uncomfortable or embarrassed way because you know that you have done something silly or wrong

4.    ploddingly – (adv) in a slow or thorough way that is not exciting

5.    precariously – (adv) in a way that seems likely to fall

6.    waning – (v) becoming gradually less strong or less important

7.    mustered – (v) got enough courage, confidence, or support to do something, especially with difficulty

8.    mortgaged – (v) if you mortgage your home, land, or property, you borrow money, usually from a bank, and if you cannot pay back the money within a particular period of time, the bank has the right to sell your property in order to get the money you owe it

9.    likeness – (n) a painting or photograph of a person, especially one that looks very like the person

10.   abscesses – (n) painful swollen parts of your skin or inside your body that have become infected and are full of a yellowish liquid
